It was a local challenge for Newent Runners last Sunday, when ten of us took on the MayHill Massacre – a nine-mile muddy, cross country run featuring the infamous May Hill.

Not the Roman Nine & Riverbank Rollick 2016

Newent Runners’ David Jones competed in the “Not the Roman Nine” 12km road race hosted by Stratford AC in bitterly cold conditions of -1◦C – and finished in 54.20 coming third in the VET60 category.

Chris Barber battled through the muddy, nine-mile “Riverbank Rollick” hosted by Thornbury AC in 1.54.13.

The race is 80 per cent off road with a 120m ascent with Barber reporting that the conditions were challenging.

Seven Sins 2016

On Bank Holiday Monday, three Newent Runners Club members braved the mud to take part in the Seven Sins Run – a seven-mile, seven-hill, and two long water tunnels, challenge.

Philip Rowe came sixth in his category (SVET) in 1.17.03, followed by Chris Barber in 1.37.55 in the same category.

James Griffiths completed the Immortal Seven Sins by running the course back to front and then the other way round – a total of 14 miles and 14 hills.

He finished in 2.29.39 – coming third in his category, and 12th in a field of 31.

FODAC Christmas Tree Race & Myositis Festive 10K 2016

In the run up to Christmas 13 Newent Runners participated in the annual FODAC Christmas Tree Race held at Ellwood, near Coleford.

The Gloucester Citizen stated:

It was a hilly, muddy and thoroughly enjoyable Sunday morning.

I’m not quite so sure about that last bit!  James Griffiths was our first member home in 47.25, other results:

Newent 9, Rogue Runs & Shakespeare Raceway 2015

Newent Runners had a busy week with several members competing in events and hosting the inaugural ‘Newent 9’ road race on Sunday.

The weather was kind, much to the relief of the marshals, and six members were able to take part.  Henry Willis won the M19 category with a 42.20 time, followed by Andrew Callard, second in his MV50 category, in 42.49.  Adrian Fishpool (44.30), Adele Mitchell (54.47), Jane Mulford (58.05) and Lisa Mansfield (1.03.28) also put in good times.

Eleven members braved the elements on Thursday night at the Rogue Run Moseley Green Night Race.  James Griffiths was first member home in 47.47 followed by Megan James in 55.31.  Other results: Andy Chambers (56.19), Sarah Carter (58.03), Micaela Swan (1.10.39), Lynn Latham and Helen Kelly (1.10.40), Kerry Cawkwell (1.10.41), Emily Trenwith (1.14.03), Claire Price (1.14.14) and Susan Baggett (1.14.24).

On Saturday, two members travelled to Long Marston airfield.  David Jones completed the Shakespeare Raceway Half Marathon in an impressive 1.39.19, winning the MV60 category, and Carey Russell finished the 10K event in 1.09.25.

A total of 21 Newent Runners participated in the Tewkesbury AC Guy Fawkes five-mile race on Sunday November 1 with John Featherstone achieving a PB and being first member home in 32:03 (3rd in MV45 category).  He was followed by David Jones in 34:00 (1st in MV60 category).

Great Birmingham Run & Eastnor Mudrunner 2015

Newent Runners coach Matthew Cole completed the Morrisons Great Birmingham Run Half Marathon in 1:39:50.

Sara Carter completed the Mudrunner Classic of around seven tough miles at Eastnor Castle, Ledbury in 1:33:01, coming sixth in her (F40) category.

Bournemouth, Cardiff and Hope Valley 2015

Three Newent Runners travelled to Bournemouth to compete in the marathon.

Mark Cryer was first home in 3:43.44, followed by Ruth Mowday (4:48.57) and Jonathan Miles (4:34.04).

Five members enjoyed the Cardiff Half Marathon, with club stalwart David Jones first member to finish in an impressive 1:37.30 for eighth place in the M60 category.

Phil Rowe clocked 1:50.43 and was followed by Lisa Mansfield (2:25.54), Sally Taylor (2:43.40) and Heather Jones in 2:52.52.

Frances Evans and Charlie finished third in the Hope Valley 7K Fun Run in 39.56.

Cheltenham Half, FOD Half & Big Dipper 2015

Newent Runners took part in the Cheltenham Half Marathon, with Andrew Lloyd the first member home in 1:58.17.

Sarah Chorlton clocked 1:59.04 for a PB, David Jones recorded 1:59.06, Karen Johnson managed 2:08.20 and Sara Carter stopped the clock at 2:15.27.  Mandy Hampton crossed the line in 2:18.19 and Trudy Jones did well for 2:25.43.

Sally Taylor represented the club at the Forest of Dean Half Marathon on the same day.

Three members took part in the Big Dipper 10K at Upton Bishop.  John Featherstone came home in 44.23 and was followed by Simon Barker (48.08) and Philip Rowe (51.07).

Great Highnam Court Run, Newent Triathlon & Two Tunnels 2015

NRs at the Highnam Court 10k 2015Newent Runners came out in force this week to take part in the inaugural the Great Highnam Court Run.

Both the female and male team categories won the 10k event, with Adrian Fishpool coming home first in fifth place with a time of 45:25.  Other results were: Phil Rowe 47:45, Russ Dyer 53:22, Chris Barber 54:48, Karen Johnson 59:32, Liza Barber 1:01:34,Lynn Latham 1:02:56, Lisa Mansfield 1:03:55, Susan Baggett 1:06:09, Emily Trenwith 1:07:35, Claire Price 1:13:27 (PB), Sally Taylor 1:17:54, Heather Jones 1:17:55, Deborah Bird 1:19:57, Angela Maile 1:20:16.

Kerry Cawkwell and Hazel Cutting, who was competing in her first race, represented the club in the 5K finishing in 44:17 and 44:18 respectively.  A special mention needs to be made for a star of the future, Owen Fishpool, (Adrian Fishpool’s teenage son), who finished the 5K in 2nd place in an impressive 20:32.

Newent Triathlon took place on Sunday and was well represented by the Club as competitors and support Marshals.  Times were not available at the time of publication, however, Henry Willis finished in 3rd place overall and was first in his category m19.  Peter Cox and Julie Willis were both 2nd in their categories of m60 and f50 respectively, followed by Steve Hurley who was 4th in his category m50.

Other competitors were Angela Sonn, who was competing in her first triathlon finished in seventh place, Russ Dyer, Helen Kelly, Jonathan Miles, Andrew Callard, Yvonne Featherstone and Cath Jones.

Susan Pritt took on the tough Two Tunnels Marathon in Bath finishing in four hours 32 minutes, her first event at this distance.
