Seasoned Newent Runners’ ultra-runner Mark Cryer introduced two novices to the distance, John Featherstone and Jonathan Miles, at the 100K Race to the Stones.  All enjoyed the experience, even the camping out, and completed the challenge, which was an impressive achievement by all.

Seventeen Newent Runners members completed the Gloucester 10K on Sunday with Henry Willis being first member home in 44:32:8, in his first race at the distance.  Not to be outdone, his mother Julie Willis finished second in her category (F 55-64) in 49:20:3.

Other results: Adrian Fishpool (44:47:3 PB), Andrew Lloyd (46:50:4 PB), Philip Rowe (47:00:8), Steve Ollis (52:17:0), Micaela Swan (52:31:0 PB), Adele Mitchell 52:35:7), Nick Hill (55:31:8), Nicola Hill (55:32:6), Susan Pritt (56:54:4), Melanie Villegas (58:26:6), Leah McAteer (59:22:3), ), Helen Kelly (1:00:11:8), Lisa Mansfield (1:00:13:6), Mandy Whittington (1:05:47), Trudy Jones (1:06:55)and Kerri Greenwold, who has recently graduated from the 0-5K Group, finished her first ever race in 1:09:55.

Also on Sunday, the Club were represented at the Evesham 10K by David Jones, who finished in an impressive 49:33 while pushing his grandson in a buggy. Heather Jones and Sally Taylor finished together in 1:14:30.  David and Heather’s grandson, Isaac, gained a further medal that day after completing the Toddler’s 500m Fun Run, showing credentials for being a potential star for the future.

Mandy Hampton, supported by Josh Hampton, completed the London Vitality 10K, crossing the line together at 1:04 along with 20,000 others. They raised over £200 for Cancer research.

Newent Runners July 2014 Report

The first weekend of the month saw two Newent Runners head to Wolverhampton, for the Birmingham and Black Country half marathon. Emily Burgess and Chris Barber signed up for this unusual event, which was a place to place race, along the towpaths of the canals that link the two cities. Although the route was flat it presented some challenges, among them, a 350 yard long dark tunnel, a steep, stepped climb of an embankment, and deep muddy puddles after two days of heavy rain. We were warned at the start that this was not a PB course. Emily did well to get below two hours. Chris “stagged” at the start and was wasted after 8 miles, will he never learn ?

The following day, at the Hereford Triathlon, four of Team Tango, put up some excellent performances. Jonathan Miles, Helen Kelly, Caroline Kimberley and Angela Hamer crossed the county border. Jonathan saw a vast improvement in his swim time, and a storming bike leg, his strongest discipline, saw him race up his category listing. Finishing with a run time of 24:37, a 5k PB, he placed 64th overall. Helen Kelly also achieved a massive PB on the run leg, and finished 117th overall. Angela, representing Tri Team Glos, placed 71stoverall in a time of 1:13:33. Caroline finished inside the first 100, with a time of 1:17:36.

On July 7th, Trudy Jones was the sole Team Tango representative in the Frampton 10k, finishing with a time of 55.49, a PB.

An unusual event took place in nearby Dymock. The poets path is a fairly non- competitive event organised by a good friend of this club, and Newent Parkrun, Philip Howells. There were 3 options, one walk and two runs. Megan James and Annie Dobson ran the 8 mile option, after a poetry recital. They were full of praise for the event.

In one of the largest turnouts in this clubs brief history, nineteen of us took part in the Gloucester 10k. On a fast course, there were a few distance PB’s. Steve McAteer achieved a 12th place finish, with a time of 38.45, followed by John Featherstone in 30th position, who recorded 42.18. Adrian Fishpool managed to get inside the top 100, with a time of 45.46. Then came, Philip Rowe (46.52) Russ Dyer, in his very first open event (49.08) Jonathan Miles (50.25) Chris Barber (52.30) Clive Jones (52.53) Emily Huntingford (54.16) Nicola Hill (56.02) Adele Mitchell, glad to be back from injury (56.04) Paula Nielens (56.06) Andrew Lioyd and Micaela Swan, crossing the line together in 56.57. Micaela has also recently recovered from a long term injury. Trudy Jones was next across the line with a time of 57.10, followed by Mel Villegas (1:01:19) Mandy Whittington ( 1:03:14) Craig Love limping across the line after getting injured early in the race, 1:07:19 and Mary Curtis, in her first event and after just a few weeks of running mainly park runs, came home in 1:20:57. Sorry Mark Cryer, I could not find you anywhere in the results !

At the same time as the Gloucester 10k was going on, the club had three members in the Evesham 10k. Dave and Heather Jones and Sally Taylor. Dave came home in 86th place with a time of 44;18, and a top ten position in his category. Sally and Heather crossed the line together with a time of 1:19:48.

Our long distance specialist ( or lunatic, depending on your point of view ) Mark Cryer attempted the Race to The Stones. This is a 100km run or walk, either over two days, or non-stop, along the ancient Ridgeway route. Mark went overnight and achieved the great result of 22nd place, out of 376, with a time just short of thirteen hours. Quite an amazing achievement. As someone who has been on a long run with Mark, and been left in his dust, I can testify to his strength and stamina. Talented git !

Of course, our talented endurance athletes are not exclusively male. Sue Smith, is currently in Switzerland, about to undertake a full ironman triathlon, at the time of writing the results are unknown, but good luck Sue.

Events from May 2014

Newent Runners competed in a variety of events all over the country.

Mark Cryer was the club’s sole representative in the gruelling Neolithic Marathon, finishing 41st overall in an impressive time of 3:48.12.

Closer to home Wayne Holford completed the Worcester Marathon and was again the only club member, finishing with a time of 3:55.

The tough Cheddar Gorge 10K featured Simon Barker, who placed 85th and was pleased to under the hour (57.16) in such a hilly event.

Several members made the shorter journey to Mallards Pike in the Forest of Dean for the Adidas 10K trail race.  In this event the club came away with some silverware as Megan James finished second in the women’s race with a time of 49.30, only just outside the top 20 overall.  Former Newent Rugby Club player Andrew Lloyd, competing in his very first running event, finished 19th and best of the Newent contingent with a time of 47.44.  Close behind him were Adrian Fishpool 23rd in with a 48.09 PB and Philip Rowe was 24th in 48.10.  Emily Burgess (52.15), Chris Barber (55.33 PB) and Helen Kelly, back from injury with a time of 1:04.27, completed the Newent contribution.

New member Trudy Jones took part in the Aviator Four race at Staverton, finishing 57th.

Club coach Mandy Whittington ran in the Forest Of Dean Trailblazer event, ploughing through mud and deep puddles to finish with a personal best for the distance.

The Whitsun Bank Holiday saw the club fielding competitors in the Edinburgh Marathon and half marathon, plus the Gloucester Triathlon and the Dymock Half Marathon.  In poor weather conditions in Scotland Wayne Holford completed the full distance in 3:54, knocking a minute off his previous time despite suffering cramp.  Alongside Holford and providing encouragement was Tony Lewis, who finished in the same time.

In the half marathon Nicola Hill led the Newent Runners home in 2:02.  Charmaine Ellis recorded 2:09 and Stacy Davis, recently back from injury, finished with a time of 2:27.

At the Gloucester Triathlon in Brockworth Stephen McAteer took fourth place overall and was runner-up in the open men’s event with a time of 1:11.04 – a good result given the presence of two elite athletes in the field.  Taking part in his first triathlon was Jonathon Miles. After struggling in the swim – his weakest discipline – he was able to make up many places on the bike leg.  He then consolidated on the run, finishing with a very respectable time of 1:38.45.

Nine club members stayed local and competed in the Dymock Half Marathon.  Mark Cryer was the pick of the bunch with a time of 1:34.23 and was followed by Sue Smith (1:57.04), Heather Roberts (2:01.08), Clive Jones (2:02.44), Lucy Stafford (2:04.44), Leah McAteer (2:06.06) and Chris Barber (2:09.35).  New members Alice and Meg Hibberd shared a time of 2:16.50 to fill out the other places.
